Every day, our Outreach Ambassador, Chris Anderson, is out in the heart of South Bend—on the streets, in alleys, and wherever our unsheltered neighbors are—offering compassion and a path forward. Chris has spent years forging connections with people facing chronic homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. His approach is grounded in empathy, persistence, and an unwavering belief in the potential for change.

Building trust isn’t always quick or easy. It often takes weeks or even months of consistent care and presence to help someone take the first step toward critical resources. But Chris never gives up, and because of his commitment, lives are being transformed.

Among downtown development organizations, Downtown South Bend, Inc. has set the standard for addressing the complex needs of our unsheltered neighbors. Whether it’s providing an immediate connect to food, housing, mental health support, or employment opportunities, Chris and our team are meeting people where they are—literally and figuratively.

Recently, with the help of our supporters, we were able to furnish an apartment for Thomas, a 79-year-old South Bend resident who had been sleeping on the streets for months. Thomas is now off the streets and rebuilding his life with the dignity and stability he deserves.
